I am excited to build 21 more Hobgrots and use 120 red hobgrots in a team even for Age of Sigmar. My last significant game of Age of Sigmar involved using 100 hobgrots at Nashcon and I enjoyed the experience very much. Now, hobgrots are cheaper and better for scoring battle tactics. It is not a good army and I wouldn’t recommend anyone have more than 40 hobgrots ready to go. However, I have 100 already painted and another 20 on the sprue so why not? After a points reduction at some point in time 120 hobgrots at 80 points costs less than 100 hobgrots at 100 points.
The current tactics in the 2025-2026 GHB are also better suited for a hobgrot heavy play with Master of the Paths and Scouting Force looking extremely easy to score. I am a noted idiot who literally doesn’t know the rules of my own army or any other force but will be learning before the end of July.
Scouting Force – Every non-hero infantry and non-hero cavalry is a scout. That means I have between 12-15 scout units depending on how reinforcements and gutrippaz are selected
- Raiding Party – Complete this tactic if there are 3 or more friendly scount units wholly outside friendly territory.
- Bold Explorers – Complete this tactic if you control 3 or more objectives or terrain within enemy territory.
- Courageous Adventurers – Complete this tactic if you control a terrain with a scout unit that was not set up this turn within enemy territory that is more than 6″ from friendly territory.
Ok, these feel very easy with 10 units of hobgrots and should be pretty easy to keep away from an opponent and set up. The first two rely on numbers to overwhelm the board and the last one involves parking a unit far far away from the battle till the end of the game. I’m so dumb that I might even pick the movement ability to prevent them from moving towards
Master the Paths
- Cut off the Head – Complete this battle tactic at the end of your turn if an enemy hero has been destroyed this battle.
- Seize the Paths – Complete this if you have more friendly units in neutral territory than enemy units.
- Envelop and Strangle – Have 3 units within 9″ of a different corner of the battlefield with only 1 setup.
I haven’t been able to fully look at the battle plans but I assume that you can score the last tactic on all of the plans. I should be able to fully destroy an enemy hero in most games but that appears to be the blocking tactic with 100+ hobgrots.
There is a lot to look over, learn, and think about as I get ready for an event in a month. With NCAA 2026, Stellaris, Job, Wife, and 40K painting this is going to be a long month to try to catch up before the event.
